A Holiday Romance

Amy Stephens

Chapter One

Kate North shut down her computer for the afternoon and inhaled deeply. She’d waited all day for five o’clock to arrive. Since the upcoming Monday was a holiday, the thought of having three days off from work excited her. Not that she had any specific plans for her extended time off, but knowing she could turn off her alarm and wake when she wanted was reason enough to be in a good mood. Just three days of pure bliss.

At home there was no one to answer to and no one expecting her to wait on them. Just peace and quiet all weekend long. With the weather already cooling off, she planned to sit out on her back porch in the new swing she’d bought for herself and read a good book. If she was lucky, she might even read a couple. The weather called for blue skies and pleasant temperatures. She couldn’t ask for anything better. And if it got a little chilly, she’d just grab a blanket.

Moving back to her hometown of Orange Grove last year had been hard, but, so far, she’d not regretted it. In fact, it’d turned out to be a blessing.

Her father’s partner at North Insurance Agency had recently retired, and he was beside himself wondering how he was going to make it on his own. With Kate coming back home again, it worked out perfectly. Her father needed help, and the job opportunity was just what she needed.

Since she’d never done that kind of work before, she’d spent the first few weeks getting acquainted with the day-to-day operations. Her father had been in the insurance profession for as long as she could remember, so she was somewhat familiar with the terminology. She caught on quickly and before long, her father suggested she take some classes and get her license as an agent, too. She was a natural with the clients. Being an insurance agent had never crossed her mind until the situation had presented itself. It’d been just what the agency needed. Since coming on board, the business had already shown a substantial increase and stood to get only better.

Like many little girls, growing up she’d wanted to be a teacher, but that had quickly changed after she’d started college. After a couple classes, she realized education might not be her calling after all. She loved kids, but she just didn’t know if she’d have the patience to work with them on a daily basis. She was more the assertive and demanding type—characteristics about herself that might not go so well amongst students. It hadn’t taken long before she’d swapped majors from elementary education over to pre-law.

It was then that she’d met Lance. They were both in their second semester of their sophomore years, and she’d fallen head over heels in love with him after they’d debated a controversial subject in one of their classes. She was so smitten. Of course she hadn’t won, but he was outspoken, and she liked that about him.
